What are the blue men?
In partnership with the West Michigan Prostate Health Alliance
(WMPHA), Detroit-based artist John Sauvé is bringing his international
sculpture project “The Man in the City” to Grand Rapids. “The Man in the
City: A conversation of numbers" is an installation that uses art to
ignite a conversation and inspire men to better understand and engage in
their personal health, specifically their prostate health. This
installation consists of a seven-foot steel sculpture of a man painted
blue for prostate cancer awareness, to be on the Blue Bridge and 11 roof
top steel blue men sculptures located in the ArtPrize district. The
goal is to increase the number of men who will know their numbers by
getting checked for prostate cancer, which can be managed well through
early detection. Sauvé hopes the ArtPrize installation will encourage
people to feel more comfortable in the overall discussion about prostate
cancer which impacts about one in seven men.
